Anyone think Tompkins holding the defenders arm with the ball carrying arm to twice get a penalty is in the spirit of how the game should be played? According to commentators these are not the 1st times he has done it.

Tackled players ' clamping ' a defenders arm happens in every game from amateur to SL , it is up to the ' tackler ' to move with the player with the ball until the ref tells him to release him , the player clamping the arm is risking giving away a penalty



Pulling back a player without the ball should be a penalty try



The two offences are completely different

Tackling a player without the ball cannot be a penalty try for the simple reason that the player may have dropped the pass or the pass may have been forward.

I do agree to a point about the tackler has more responsibility to not find themselves in position where the tackled player can take advantage by clamping the arm etc. But its one of those annoying things that happen in RL, like when a ball is ripped out or lost control in a 2 man tackle for example - there is no way the ref knows for sure and he may as well flip a coin for which way it goes.

Oh and for what it's worth the ref bottled it by not sending tomkins off for kicking out if not at the very least for ten mins!
