| Quote RugbyVillasBoy="RugbyVillasBoy"Exactly where my point of reference was - in the very early days it was close to pipe8 and glass, Welly, or even the Appletree at Marton (which is now the Abbey near Thirsk - and as an aside, if you've not been there you really should, I'm hungry just thinking about it
)
And I thought "brilliant, we have somewhere on our doorstep which might not be "as" good but is pretty close, and I don't have to do a 60mile round trip to.......but then it went downhill fairly quickly'"
maybe they got lazy and complacent, it happens a heck of a lot.
Bi Bi's in L**ds is an example, we used to regulalrly spend £200 in there for lunch for 3 or 4 of us, won't even go in the place now.

| Complacent/arrogant is maybe the thing yeah. You're right the competition in the local area was slim (it's slightly, although not greatly by any means, improved) and when not being pushed it's easy to fall off your game I guess.

| Quote RugbyVillasBoy="RugbyVillasBoy"I don't have any issues with the "faceless cafe bars" down Prinny, I think some of the best attributes of the place is I can wander round the corner on a sunny Sunday morning and actually get some "cafe culture" and watch the world go by....hmm like this morning methinks, time to get out of bed for a Latte

My point was love it hate it, Boars Nest was different. Plenty of places down there serving burgers, jackets spuds, paninis etc.

I know what you meant and was only being a bit jovial on this fine sunny morning (but was deadly serious about my brekkie and coffee though, just going now!)
I think you miss a few of the places out tho - true there is the burger and spud places but they're mainly the bars TBH, you also have Laundry, Da Gianni, Marrakesh Ave, Thai House, Tama Ria, Bengal Lounge and Fudge. Whilst I'm not arguing the quality (or lack of) in any of these places, you can't say that it's just a faceless trail of identical places.

| Quote Standee="Standee"but where are you comparing it to, that was the point I was making, for the same money you could go to Pipe andd Glass in Dalton and eat 10 times better, or the Wellington Arms in Lund for a lot less.
The HDM Good Food Guide isn't a measure of success imho.'"
Comparing Pipe and Glass against the Boars Nest is a little daft. Ive eaten at P&G and it was very good - although in my experience the service was better in BN, but the point is you can buy two courses for less than 20 quid in BN, you struggle tp find a starter less than 15 in PG on the lunch time menu.
Also, I think by some of the comments on here that I may have just had a one off good experience but while Standee says its good by Hull standards, I have eaten all over the country and I think its one of the best pre 20 quid meal I have had in a resturant.

Standee can be a patronizing bore at times, although at other times I agree with him 100%.
The Boars Nest [iwas[/i excellent, and was listed in the national Good Food Guide [inot[/i the HDM one as Standee suggests. It was pricey at first and the food was quality. Unfortunately, it was rarely full, probably because of the reasons cited by the owners for the move. They felt the need to bring prices more in line with the rest of Prinny Ave and the quality dropped. Simple as that.
There are several nice restaurants still in Hull, notably Cook's Endeavour owned and cheffed by by the bloke who previously had Venn, which was, of course, Michelin starred like the Pipe and Glass . As Standee distances himself from evreything Hull, including, it now seems, the rugby, he wouldn't know that, though.

on the two occasions I have been it was more than £20 per person.
Anyway, it wont succeed at Rudstone, too much and better competition. And I haven't heard of Cooks Endeavour, where is it?
by the way, a Michelin Star doesn't awlays guarantee quality in my experience.

| Personally i wont miss the toasted goats nipple in a white wine and ostrich ar$e hair reduction serving type of gaff! Its full of champagne charlies on lemonade wages types pretending to be something that they are not, nor will never be! Its Princess Avenue for christ sakes not bloody Mayfair. GET A GRIP PEOPLE ITS WEST HULL where normal working class people went to the Boulevard, had a few pints of dodgy ale and sung obscenities at opposing fans and players alike, what's happening to us???

Quite right... if someone wants good food, go to London. The people of Hull should only have fish & chips, fry ups, turkey twizzlers, and maybe a roast dinner on a Sunday.

Down Scale Lane, next to Manchester Arms. I only noticed it the other day.. Everyone I've spoken to has spoken highly of it, and so I've been meaning to give it a try for a while now...
Personally, I've only ever been to Boar's Nest twice. Once was the evening set price menu, and two courses for £18 was excellent. Been there for an Xmas party before too, and it was excellent.
It'll be missed for me...
