| Those saying excellent news and good stuff etc do realise the implication for any overseas signings if he stays don't they?
He is both none federation and a quota player.
Does Phelps give 100% effort? Yes.
However does he fit in with this from the WEP article being discussed on the signings thread and I quote:
"Ian Lenagan has vowed any new signings he makes for next season will be 'top quality'"
Phelps is IMO quite simply NOT top quality. He's OK but using one of 6 none federation and one of the five quota spots on him means if we re-sign him that is one less 'top quality' overseas player we [ican[/i sign.
Those are the cold hard facts and if we re-sign him then I don't know how IL is going to square it with using the quota spots only for top quality players.
Unless of course IL isn't going to sign anyone else which I suspect may be the case given he can't find any one of the "right quality at the right price". Guess we will be settling for the wrong quality at the right price!

| Great signing, done well enough at the minute to deserve the one-year extension which also enables us to have the same flexibilty with the SC next year.
If he keeps up this form next year then i think he could well be wigans fb for a few more years yet.
Still think he needs to dye his hair ginger though!

Bla Bla Bla.....
Phelps has been resigned because he is the best fullback at the club and not resigning him would leave us with an unecessary hole to fill.
He is in form and deserves it. Its that simple. No Quoteathon will change that.

Do you not think he could develop into a top quality full back?
I do, he's been getting better each week and is working with Rads so he certainly has the potential.
If he doesn't fulfill potential we simply don't renew in 12 months. Simples

| Very pleased, Phelps has really impressed me in the fullback role. He needs some more work on the defensive aspects of the role clearly but the way he chimes into the line and acts as an extra halfback really is giving us an extra dimension in attack. This was something Pat Richards couldn't do. Got a great offload, decent pace and agility and most importantly he's a 100% player who the fans have taken to.

Re-signing him means we can sign one less overseas player. Fact.
We have two players capable of playing full back besides him. Fact.
Therefore his quota spot and none federation spot could be used to get in one of these two quality players IL is banging on about.

He's not good enough. I don't care how much effort he puts in to endear him to you and others he us just not a good enough full back when we need to use his quota spot for a top quality player and the longer we carry on re-signing players of this standard the longer we will be from consistent success.

| Good news, the key for me is that it's a one year deal so were not committing ourselves to him for a long time, and I would imagine that he likes being at the club because to only sign a one year deal when there's little doubt other superleague clubs would have offered him a longer deal yet he chose us, great news.

Agreed. I'm not sure we can 'afford' to keep him given that he's quota. But the guy is improving all the time, and doing good things for us in the no. 1 shirt - which few have in recent years.
A difficult decision for the chairman. No doubt whichever way he jumps on this, certain people will attempt to rip him a new butthole.

No idea if he could turn into a top quality full back but he is out of contract at the end of the season and as I have said elsewhere he is a quota player and a none federation trained player.
If these constraints were not there, then sign him up as a utility player on little cash but they are. I can not see how re-signing him squares with IL going to OZ looking for a prop and a half back because if he re-signs Phelps I am pretty sure that means he can only sign one overseas player for 2010 and that could also only happen if Carmont left as well.
There are more constraints on the side than the salary cap.

Given the choice of Carmont or Bailey leaving, I would actually choose Carmont.

I see your point but personally I think that we haven't got anybody lined up to come in and if we do find an overseas player to come in then Phil Bailey would leave freeing up the quota space and salary cap space (but that shouldn't be an issue if Bailey, Hock and Smith leave)
