NEWS: Wigan Riversiders / New Springs Lions
As people may have heard, the Wigan Riversiders attended a meeting last night with the committee of New Springs Lions.

Our aim as a summer club is to try and keep the lads playing winter rugby together, we respect that a number of lads will return to there own winter clubs, but we also know that a large number of lads have no regular/registered winter club.

We have been approached by New Springs who as of last week where not running an open age team due to low numbers. The Riversiders have agreed to help out and make a non-official partnership for players to play for both clubs over the winter and summer. Our main goal is to become more competitive in the summer leagues and getting a stable side that play together year round is a massive step for us. We have made it clear that keeping our lads together is our goal and from a Riversiders perspective the summer competition will always be our main focus and importantly the seasons do not overlap.

We call on players who are not currently registered with a winter to head down to New Springs.

Last night New Springs where accepted back into Division 4 of the North West Counties, and competitive games start in 2 weeks time.

TRAINING: Will be held next Tuesday (31st August) @ New Spring’s home venue from 7pm. We ask all Riversiders players too meet at 645pm at the Club House.

NORTH WEST
Grand Final

WIDNES WEST BANK BEARS 28 WIGAN RIVERSIDERS 10

Thanks to a scintillating first half performance, West Bank were crowned champions of the RL Conference NW Premier division at Eccles ARLFC.

On conceding several early penalties the Bears were under pressure and when they were on the end of a harsh sin binning it looked like the huge Wigan outfit were sure to take advantage.

However the 12 men seemed to find extra motivation and started to make inroads deep into their opponents defence.

With Ste Jones, Wayne Courtnage and Peter Clarke hammering away, West Bank started to dominate both field position and possession.

Ryan Millington’s footwork created space for him to cause hesitation and his astute pass put Luke Willings in between the posts for Tommy Arrowsmith to convert.

The next score was a classic individual effort from Greg Pichilingi weaving his way over from 60 metres and five minutes later, Dave Jones’s long pass was taken at speed by Kevin Gamble for the next four pointer.

Ste Curphey took advantage of strong runs from Shaun Conroy and Ryan Bates for a well taken short range try which was converted by Ste Mellor and the final score of the half came from Mark Ryan who ran strongly onto a magnificent ball from Arrowsmith.

Again Mellor added the extras for a 26-0 half time advantage.

The score line may even have been even greater with both Conroy and Clarke having scores wiped off.

The third quarter was scoreless as Riversiders played their way back into the contest, Bob Allard crossing on the hour to give them hope.

That was snuffed out when Oliver Faye sealed victory for the Bears with eight minutes to play, Mellor goaling.

Riversiders – who have enjoyed a terrific debut season – finished with a deserved, consolation try from winger Greg Brown.
